La St Valentin

La première mention du jour de la Saint-Valentin avec une connotation amoureuse remonte au XIVe siècle en Angleterre, où l’on croyait que le 14 février était le jour où les oiseaux s'appariaient (lire entre autres « La Dame à la licorne »). Cette croyance est mentionnée dans les écrits de Geoffrey Chaucer au XIVe siècle...

Il était courant durant cette période que les amoureux échangent des billets et s’appellent chacun leur Valentin. Un de ces billets du XIVe siècle se trouverait à la British Library. Il est probable que nombre de légendes sur la Saint-Valentin ont été inventées pendant cette période.

Le jour de la Saint-Valentin a longtemps été célébré comme étant la fête des célibataires et non des couples. Le jour de la fête, les jeunes filles célibataires se dispersaient aux alentours de leur village et se cachaient en attendant que les jeunes garçons célibataires les trouvent (définition des Lupercales). À l’issue de ce cache-cache géant, les couples formés étaient amenés à se marier dans l’année. Ceci permettait de développer la démographie et stimuler l’expansion des villages.

Cette pratique laissait libre cours à beaucoup de tricheries de la part de couples officieux ainsi que des hommes qui visaient une jeune fille en particulier et notamment « la plus belle du village », très courtisée.
